IBS needs an appropriate evaluation
Irritable bowel syndrome can involve recurring abdominal pain with changes in bowel movements. Constipation, diarrhea, or both may occur. Similar symptoms can have other causes, so a label based on an internet checklist is not enough. A clinician reviews the pattern, medical history, and examination and decides whether tests are needed.
Bring a useful history
Note when symptoms started, stool changes, medication use, recent illness, and links with meals or stress. Avoid starting a highly restrictive diet without guidance. If food changes are recommended, ask how to maintain adequate nutrition and how and when foods should be reintroduced.
Do not dismiss warning signs
Blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, or severe or worsening pain should be assessed promptly. Those symptoms should not simply be attributed to IBS. Seek urgent care when symptoms are severe or you cannot stay hydrated.
